HORA Hora
is the main town on the island (it took over from Palaiopolis (old
city-see below).
Hora, constructed underneath a beautiful Venetian castle,
contains a very rich museum full of wall frescos and icons found in
the many ruins of the island. Hora has approximately 1500 inhabitants. In Hora they operate four museums, which
attract many visitors all year round due to their periodic excibitions. The nautical museum holds a collection of ship models and other instruments that are related with the nautical tradition of Andros.
The archaelogical museum, which is donation of the Goulandris family, holds many findings related with the history of Andros, starting from the ancient times.
The museum of modern art was founded by the Goulandris family. From time to time this museum excibits works of
very famous artists, like, Matis, Picasso and others.
PALAIOPOLIS Palaiopolis
was the ancient town of Andros, just underneath the tallest peak,
Petalon, built right on the seaside on the Western side of the
Island.
This is presumed to be the only ancient town on the island. Here
used to be an Acropolis with a very thick wall, parts of which can
be seen today.
Parts of the town, including sarcophagi, frescos, sculptures and
icons are all in the museum, in Hora.
One of the most impressive finds is the statue of Hermes, built
during the 4th century BC which is now on view at the Athens
Archaeological museum.
STENIES This town, near to the main island town of Hora is
famous, because most of the inhabitants are either Captains of ships
of shipping magnates. Having more than 2000 inhabitants, it is ful
of modern expensive houses admired by everyone.
BATSI The cosmopolitan tourist center of Andros , with many hotels, studios, restaurants and bars.
GAVRIO The main port of Andros, where the ships from Rafina and Pireaus arrive. It has as recent tourist development, with modern hotels, studios and other tourist facilities.
