The statue of the unseen sailor in the town of Andros.
The statue is dedicated to all of the sailors lost in the sea.
Andros was originally inhabited by Kares followed by the Phoenicians, Egyptians, Cretans, Kares (again), Pelasgians
and finally the Ionians. In fact, Thoukidides did indicate that during his time (about 5th century BC) there were
tombs of the Kares on the island. The Cretans who followed, arrived about a century after the Trojan war.
Pelasgians, according to the locals, are the true ascendants of the islanders today. Many ruins are found all over
the island.
The capital of Andros during the classical times was Paleopolis. Many findings, which indicate the prosperity of this
ancient city are excibited in the Archeological Museum in the modern capital of Andros, (hora).
Andros was occupied consecutively by Romans,Franks and Ottoman Turks. The War of Independence, which is
a turning point on the modern history of Andros, was declared on 1821. Andros had on late 19th and the begining
of the 20th century
a great nautical tradition which contributed on the local economy. It was due to this tradition that Andros reached a
peak on its economic wealth. If you are a frequent traveller in the cyclades island complex you will notice that
Andros is one of the few island which still has its hora (capital) near the sea and not on the top of a hill or in the
mainland of the island.
