Bread Recipes

Bread has always been important to Greeks. For some Greeks bread is so important that no meal can be conceived without it. Especially for elderly people, who have suffered a lot most of their life due to the unlucky events of modern Greek history, bread was very important, since it was the only edible thing could support.

Bread played a very important role in every day life in Ancient Greece. The flour was kneaded with water, or with water and honey, sometimes with oil or honey and wine (oinomelo). The breads varied in the manner of cooking as well as in shape.

In recent years there is a great variety of breads, according to the season, the different feasts and anniversaries. The technics of making bread have evolved. Although most of the baking stores prefer to make cheep and easy making bread, still they make traditional varietes of bread for those who appreciate more elegant tastes. The truth is that there was a crisis in Greek bread making a few years ago. The Greek bakers had started producing cheap and easy making bread. Nowdays there is a trend for demanding good quality bread.

We have collected for you different kinds of bread. Some are made on special occasions, like feasts or anniversaries. Others can be served as appetizers and others just to accompany a main course.
