Fried Cheese

  1. Cut the cheese into 1 cm thick slices.
  2. Heat the butter in a frying pan and put the slices in.
  3. Turn the heat down a little and let it cook for 1-2 minutes until it bubbles.
  4. It should not turn brown, but should look creamy and sticky.
  5. Sprinkle a little lemon juice on top and some black pepper and offer it with fresh bread.

In Greece the cheese is usually cooked in small frying pans, so they can be taken straight to the table.

  • 250 gr. any hard cheese, kefalotyri Parmesan, Gruyere or Greek Cypriot haloumi
  • 50 grams butter
  • lemon juice of 1/2 lemon
  • black pepper

  1. a friend who lives in kefelonia recommended dipping cheese in egg and lemon, then in flour, fry each side take out of pan then redo the process. Gorgeous

Why butter???? Olive oil is the greek way!

  3. you dont have to add pepper, i went to greece over the summer, most restaruants didnt put pepper in it. and with the other dude, extra virgin olive oil, butter does not make it taste like the actual greek way.

    • I agree , I think the pepper is not added to the cheese. And when I went to a greek restaurant in greektown in detroit They use oil then light the cheese on fire, OOOOPAAA!!! Then lemon puts the flame out served with hard crust sliced bread, WOW!!!
